Installing and Removing SMART Board Software 9.7.x.x for the Linux Operating System Installing SMART Board Software 9.7.x.x ----------------------------------- NOTES - Before you proceed, make sure your computer meets the minimum requirements for SMART Board software 9.7.x.x. See LinuxHardwareNotes.txt with the installation files for this information. - The SMART Board software installation process uses the Autopackage system. If Autopackage isn't found on your computer, SMART Board software installs it automatically. Both the installation of SMART Board software and Autopackage requires your root password. For more information about autopackage, see http://www.autopackage.org. IMPORTANT: If you've installed an earlier version of SMART Board software, you must remove that version before you install version 9.7.x.x. To install SMART Board software 9.7.x.x for the Linux operating system ------------------------------------------------------------------ Web install only: 1. Download the SMART Board Software 9.7.x.x.package.tar.gz file from the SMART web site, and save it to your computer. 2. Decompress the file you've copied or downloaded to your computer. Navigate to the decompressed folder to access the files required for the install. Web and CD Install: 1. Double-click SMART Board Software 9.7.x.x.package (located on the first CD, SMART Board Software) and follow the on-screen instructions. 2. To install SMART Essentials for Educators, double-click SMART Essentials for Educators 1.1.x.x.package (located on the second CD, SMART Essentials for Educators), and follow the on-screen instructions. After the installation finishes, you can access SMART Board software 9.7.x.x through the K Menu in the KDE window manager or the Applications menu in the Gnome window manager. If SMART Board software doesn't appear in the K Menu or Application Menu, the version or distribution of Linux doesn't support menu installation. You can use the command line to start SMART Notebook software and the SMART Board software service (see LinuxHardwareNotes.txt with the installation files for the command-line instructions). Removing SMART Board Software 9.7.x.x ------------------------------------- From the K Menu or Applications menu (depending upon the window manager), open System > More Programs > Manager 3rd party software. Highlight SMART Board software and SMART Essentials (two separate processes) and click Remove. SMART Board software 9.7.x.x is removed from your computer. If the third-party software management utility isn't available on your computer, you can also use the Linux command line to remove SMART board software 9.7.x.x. To remove SMART Board software 9.7.x.x from a Linux command line ------------------------------------------------------------ 1. Open a terminal window. 2. Type the following command to login in as the root user: su. When prompted, enter the root password. 3. Type the following command: package remove SMARTBoardSoftware. SMART Board software 9.7.x.x is removed from your computer. 4. Type the following command: package remove SMARTEssentials. Smart Essentials for Educators 1.1.x.x is removed from your computer. SMART Board software automatically creates files and directories that contain user-specific settings. These files aren't removed when you remove the software, so you must manually delete the following files and directories: /.config/SMART Technologies /etc/xdg/SMART Technologies ~/SMART Technologies Notes for System Administrators ------------------------------- 1. SMARTBoardService and SMART Board Tools must be running for SMART Board software to work. These two applications don't launch upon login, except for the user account that was used to install the SMART Board software package. This is to prevent any conflict with the existing system administration rules that have been set up for your system. Instead, system administrators will need to decide which user account(s) will automatically launch the applications upon login. 2. The installer changes the permissions for /dev/ttyS* and /dev/hiddev* to global read and write (666).
